What is worship?
Worship is a time for communication with God. Every effort is made to make our worship services relevant “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship.”
Romans 12:1 NIV for both the person who has known Christ for a long time and the one who is getting to know him for the first time. At Calumet Street we strive to get people involved in worship. Our desire is to make our worship a time where every individual is a participant rather than a spectator. Worship involves several elements:
Preaching
The apostle Paul told his friend, Timothy, to "preach the word." Preaching is an important part of our worship at Calumet Street. Each message is prepared to feed people's spiritual needs with practical insights and challenges from the Bible. We treasure the Bible and maintain an uncompromising and unashamed view of it as the inspired, authoritative word of God. Worshipers are encouraged to follow along in their Bibles and examine the scriptures together.
Communion
We consider communion the pinnacle of our worship time. Communion is a time to reflect and remember the sacrifice Christ made for us on the cross. This is done by the taking of bread and juice, symbolic elements of Jesus' body and blood. We "do this in remembrance" of him every week, remembering every time we meet together the sacrifice that was made for us. (1 Corinthians 11:23-26)
Singing

Singing and music are a big part of our worship times. Music infiltrates all parts of our world, because we are moved by it and able to express thoughts, emotions, and feelings through singing and music. Singing in worship is a vehicle for our scripture recitation, praises, and prayers to God. "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God." (Colossians 3:16 NIV)
Prayer
Jesus said, "My house will be a house of prayer." (Mark 11:17 NIV) Prayer is crucial to both personal and corporate times of worship. Simply put, prayer is communication with God. Prayer, in one form or another, consumes much of our worship service. We pray through our songs of worship. We pray silently during our communion time. We are also led in prayer at several different points during our service. "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective." (James 5:16 NIV)
Offerings
The Lord, speaking through the prophet Malachi, says, "Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me.... In tithes and offerings.... Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse...and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it." (Malachi 3:8-10 NIV) We at Calumet Street desire neither to rob God nor to frustrate his desire to pour out blessings. Therefore, we provide the opportunity each week for God's people to bring their tithes and offerings to the Lord. Calumet Street believes that this is a very private matter between each individual and God. No one is asked how much they give or told how much to give.
